Goat's milk

July 16, 2008 at 9:56 am in Farm and Garden

Got this question in the comments this morning. . .

Do y’all drink that goats milk? How does goat milk taste?

Well, we would drink it, if we still had it. When Saphena was born, we didn’t milk Sasha that much because the baby needed the milk. We wanted to wait til she was a little bit older before we milked her. Unfortunately, the baby was biting her so much that she had sores – so we didn’t want to aggravate things. By the time the sores healed, her milk had dried up.

I never did drink any. I was pregnant and didn’t want to drink the raw milk without being used to it. Stephen had some and said it tasted “fine” but I never did taste it.

Saphena is old enough now to become a mama herself (she’s 13 months old) but so far, neither of our girls has gotten pregnant. I’m hoping for some goat babies soon, but none so far.

I’m hoping to post some pics soon that I took the other day of the goats. My digital camera died, and my friend Stephanie loaned me her camera. Hers is really nice! I got some GREAT shots around here, but everything is still on my hard drive. . .

Pink shoes

July 10, 2008 at 11:30 am in Miracles

God has done it again – He provided a whole bunch of new-to-me clothes! I am so excited!

A lady from church had gone through her closet and had some things for me. It was so fun to go through everything. She has such a classy sense of style and all the clothes were in great condition.

There was also a bag of shoes. It’s crazy – she and I are almost the same size in both clothes AND shoes. There was a brand new pair of navy shoes in there, which fit perfectly. I’ve been wanting a pair of blue shoes to go with my navy skirts. But an incredibly fun discovery was a pair of pink pumps. I’m not sure if I have anything to go with them but they fit and are SO cute.

Stephen had a great time laughing at me while I tried everything on. Some of the jumpers and sleeveless dresses were snug in my shoulders and he thought it was pretty funny watching me trying to fit into them.

There were quite a few things that almost fit but are still a bit too small. They’re going into my back closet for now – but are definitely motivation to get more of this weight off. But I did get into a size 8 skirt – it must be an awfully large size 8 for me to get into it, lol.

It was also neat to see some of the things she had paired together. Basic jumpers, but with blouses or pretty sweaters layered over top. I have a bazillion jumpers, but often forget that tops can be worn over them for a totally different look. And being able to mix and match all of those layers – wow. It puts SO many more options in my wardrobe.

It was a massive encouragement. I’ve been slowly building my wardrobe back up while I work on losing weight, but to have some more nice clothes -right now- is a real blessing.

Isn’t it neat how God knows just when to provide some of our wants along with our needs?

Stephen just took this picture today. Her name is Saphena, and she was born here.

It suits our farm.

First haircut

July 5, 2008 at 4:06 pm in Mommy Moments,Pictures

Little C got his first haircut today. Poor little guy – he’s lost most of his hair since birth, but the front of his hair was over two inches long and looked really silly. So I grabbed a pair of scissors and evened things up a little. I’m really going to miss the wild hair he had, but that’s ok. The new hair that’s growing in looks more blond than brown – I’m really curious what color he’ll end up with.

This little guy is such a carbon copy of his daddy! But what gets me is he really doesn’t look like Stephen’s baby pictures. . .

Fourth of July fun

We had a cookout at church last night. It was SO fun. It started pouring right before we were ready to eat, but let up just in time for us to go shoot off some fireworks.

It’s great – the church sits down off the road and has a very long driveway. The men go light the fireworks halfway up the drive. The rest of us can sit back by the church and enjoy the display.

Then after all the “big ones” are gone, the kids light sparklers. It’s great.

There was also a t-shirt decorating contest. S had a blast making his (at MawMaw’s house Thursday night – nothing like waiting til the last minute!). C hated making his – as soon as I touched his hand to the paint he started squalling. He was furious! It was funny. I painted the words “Little Firecracker” on his shirt. It suits him.

I made one too (well, sort of – it wasn’t patriotic). Right before we left for church, I put it on only to discover that it was waaaay too tight. I bought the same size t-shirt that I’ve been wearing but a different brand. Even though this shirt was labeled “not too loose, not too tight” it was way too tight. I can’t believe how society’s standards have changed today – there’s no way I’d consider that thing modest. Now I can’t decide whether or not to keep the shirt for when I lose more weight or to just give it away or sell it or something. Grr. I almost bought the next size up, but didn’t. But I’m not even 100% sure that would have fit. Ugh.

But anyway, here are some pictures. I tried taking pictures with and without flash – got some pretty neat ones even if they aren’t all perfectly clear.

I just love how this picture captured everything

Popsicles and sparklers – what a great combination

Checking the hives

July 2, 2008 at 9:33 am in Bees,Farm and Garden

Stephen opened up the hives last night so that we could get some pictures. The bees were pretty feisty, even after he smoked them, so we didn’t get as many pictures as we were hoping to get.

Removing a frame from Mercy

A frame from Mercy – full of new comb and uncapped honey

A closer look at the frame

Replacing the feeding jar on Mercy (we’re still feeding them to ensure they get going really strong)

Smoking Grace before removing frames

These two hives have really been working hard. There is a LOT of new comb and uncapped honey. It’s good to see active hives again!

Well, I’m calling it done for now. Might make more changes later, but for now – I’m done. I like all this pink. :O)
